Asdas mainly female store staff have won a victory thanks to the GMB union

Voice of the Mirror: Asda pay judgement another reminder of importance of trade unions

This historic ruling was only achieved thanks to dogged work by the GMB – when ministers cannot be bothered to stand up for what is right, it is hardly surprising that companies are reluctant to act fairly.

For too long, women have been discriminated against over pay and conditions.

That is why yesterday’s judgement against the supermarket Asda is so important.

The Supreme Court ruled that the mainly female shop staff should not be treated differently from higher-paid warehouse workers.

Although this battle is far from won, it could result in thousands of women at firms across the country getting the pay they deserve.

This historic ruling is another reminder of why trade unions are so important.

It was only achieved thanks to dogged work by the GMB. But in the 21st century, women should not have to battle through the courts to end such blatant discrimination.

Nor does it help that this Tory government has suspended companies’ mandatory obligation to report their gender pay gaps.

When ministers cannot be bothered to stand up for what is right, it is hardly surprising that companies are reluctant to act fairly.
