The UK has just had a decade of cruel austerity inflicted on itself by successive Conservative governments. Funding across the board has been cut, especially for local councils.

Now there is the COVID — 19 pandemic. The government has implemented many schemes to help people temporarily, but there is growing fear that austerity could be used by the government again to “help” this country out of the inevitable economic destruction the pandemic brings.

There was a LabourList article by Claire Holland (link at bottom) which outlined what some Labour run councils were doing to help people during the crisis, with the little government funding they do have. But, her fear, as of many others, is that the people will end up bearing the brunt by austerity measures.

We in the Labour Party will do everything possible to ensure that doesn’t happen.
