And Angela Rayner!

A message from Havant Labour chair Simon Cattermole on the leadership election:

As the mantle of leadership passes from one person to another, we need to remind ourselves of why we are members of this great Party and movement, to congratulate Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner, and to send our commiserations to those who were not successful in this election for Leader and Deputy Leader.

The principles and values we hold as members of the Labour Party have not changed; they are the one constant in the history of our Party. Our sense of community is even more urgent now, as is the need to unite and fight to get through the current crisis, hold the government to account and build a better future for everyone in this country.

Our enemy is not within; we shall have argument and debate of course – that is healthy in a democratic party – and we shall take decisions in that spirit of democracy in order to move our views and values forward.

Now this election is over, the most important and immediate thing is to ensure that we play our part in getting through this crisis. Many of us are involved in community groups and initiatives to support people during the emergency.

If any good is to come out of the present crisis, it has to be the notion that community is important; we hold things in common and in unity we trust.

In solidarity

Simon Cattermole

We have also learnt tonight that PM Boris Johnson is in intensive care with COVID-19, and everyone here at Havant Labour wishes him a speedy recovery.
